Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore has made an unprecedented declaration of his wealth, saying he has net assets of Sh277.3 million ($2.7 million).
Mr Collymore has decided to make his wealth public as part of his efforts to boost transparency and fight corruption that has permeated both Kenya’s public and private sectors.
“Corruption distorts markets and has a negative impact on society as a whole, in both the developing and the developed world,” Mr Collymore said.
“It is the reason why the responsibility to turn the tide against corruption ultimately lies with us as individuals.”
Among the assets listed by Mr Collymore is a house in London valued at $530,000 (Sh54 million) and shares in Safaricom, the Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed company that he heads, worth $180,000 (Sh18.3 million).
No other CEO of a publicly traded company in Kenya has declared their wealth, making Mr Collymore’s a ground-breaking move in furtherance of corporate ethics and governance.
