THE University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), has allayed fears that cholera has hit its campuses, insisting that so far, there was no any reported case related to the outbreak.
This comes a day after two UDSM students
were rushed to the university dispensary at the main campus on Monday
after they had experienced abdominal pains and diarrhea shortly after
getting food at Cafeteria I of the main campus.
The UDSM Vice Chancellor, Prof Rwekaza
Mukandala, told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam that the students had
received medical treatment at the university dispensary, adding that
they were discharged on the same day following improvement of their
conditions.
Prof Mukandala pointed out that the
students had experienced the problem after having food at Cafeteria 1
noting that the UDSM management was closely following the hygienic
conditions at the University Cafeterias.
“We have already cautioned the owner of Cafeteria 1 against unhygienic conditions at the canteen,” he observed.
Prof Mukandala said the UDSM management
last year suspended services offered by Cafeteria 1 following unhygienic
conditions, saying the Cafeteria owner (whose identity was not
immediately established) took the UDSM management to court.
“The UDSM management plan to part ways
with the cafeteria owner after his tender expires next year,” said the
UDSM Vice Chancellor.
In another development, Prof Mukandala,
said UDSM had taken measures to strengthen hygienic conditions to
prevent cholera outbreak, saying the UDSM had directed water tanker
owners with the order to supply water to its campuses to ensure the
service is always available.
“We have directed water tanker owners to ensure students access clean water at their hostels all the time,” he said
