DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has officially received a complete set of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) equipment to be installed at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
TFF Media and Information Officer, Clifford Ndimbo, confirmed that training is underway for Tanzanian technicians on installing the system.
“Following the training for technicians, the next step will involve training of referees to effectively utilise the technology,” noted Ndimbo.
The VAR system aims to assist referees in making right decisions related to goal controversies, offences leading to goals, penalty decisions, and offences leading to penalty decisions, direct red card incidents and cases of mistaken identity.

During the federation’s 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Iringa last year, TFF President, Wallace Karia announced the provision of VAR equipment by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with installations set to commence soon.
Karia emphasised that the equipment will only be installed at venues meeting FIFA and CAF standards. Furthermore, the TFF president proposed installing VAR at the Amaan Sports Complex in Zanzibar.
This move has been welcomed by stakeholders, with the Tanzania Premier League Board CEO, Almasi Kasongo, highlighting the importance of having VAR in the country. Kasongo emphasised the benefits of VAR in providing referees with a second chance to review controversial scenarios before making final decisions.
The 60,000-capacity Benjamin Mkapa Stadium is currently the largest stadium in the country. It has been selected as one of the venues to host matches during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that will be jointly staged by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.
