TZ deploys swimmers at African tourney

ANGOLA: NATIONAL Swimming Team will take part in the 16th Absolute African Swimming and Open Water Championship to be staged at Alvalade Swimming Pool in Luanda, Angola set to begin tomorrow and conclude on May 4th.

The national Team includes three swimmers, Hilal Hilal, Collins Saliboko and Sophia Latiff. Speaking to the `Daily News’ yesterday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Swimming Association (TSA) Director of Education and Development, Jeremiah Keema, said they were hopeful that the trio will shine at the event.

“They are the ones who met the criteria to be featured at the competition as such, we are confident that they will do well and bring home medals. “This is a big swimming competition which comprises of many African countries and for Tanzania, we are all behind them because our flag will be flown high by the trio,” he said.

He added that the swimmers will be evaluated basing on the Africa levels as such, their performance will be categorised in consideration of the entire continent.

“This will enable those that will do well at the event to be considered when it comes to selection of best swimmers from specific African countries to compete at a particular Aquatics competition,” he said.

Again, Keema noted that if the trio will miss an opportunity to grab medals, they can still be able to beat their current time records a thing he said will also be an added advantage.

“As a country, we should acknowledge them and cherish whatever they will bring from this event because it will come from their hardworking spirit that is why we deserve to congratulate them at all cost,” he said.

According to him, the three swimmers will be under the tutelage of Zuberi Likoko throughout the competition. Meanwhile, Angola is the ninth country to host the event and its 2020 edition which was scheduled in South Africa was cancelled because of Covid-19.
