MERCK Foundation, a branch of Merck KGaA Germany, in collaboration with first ladies of African countries has announced 11 journalists from Tanzania as winners of its awards, including four from The Guardian Limited.

The ‘Merck Foundation Media Recognition Awards 2023’ recognize contribution of media outlets in the protection of women and girls’ dignity and public health education against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

Among 11 awardees are journalists from The Guardian Limited, namely Marco Maduhu, Shaban Njia and Christina Mwakangale of Nipashe newspaper and Beatrice Philemon of The Guardian newspaper.

Others are Aveline Kitomary (Habari Leo), Veronica Mrema (matukio na maisha blog), Adam Hando (CG Fm), Tulinagwe Malopa (Gazetini), Lucy John Bosco (Mwananchi), Mwanaisha Makumbuli (Highlands Fm) and Olga Lungala (Moshi Fm).

Maduhu won second place in the ‘More Than a Mother’ award, a category on protection of girls and women's integrity and addressing discrimination against their health and gender.

Mwakangale won first place in the category which recognises health journalism against NCDs and Philemon won third place in the category for women’s economy and protection of their dignity.

The foundation announces the awards every year to provide an opportunity for journalists from the African continent to compete in various zones namely Southern Africa; East Africa and West Africa as well as countries that speak Portuguese and French.

Dr Rasha Kelej, Chief Executive Officer of the foundation announced the winners in an online meeting which brought together the participants at the weekend.

He said the objective is to increase awareness especially in the health sector so that the society can stop discrimination against barrenness and take precautions against NCDs.

Dr Kelej said that 53 participants from Africa competed in the category of ‘More Than a Mother’ to combat abuse, aid education for girls and women empowerment and 29 participants took part in the category on diabetes and hypertension.

“I am happy to announce winners of the Merck Foundation in 2023 who have become the voice of the voiceless. The winners of these awards have made a major contribution to educate the public on hypertension and diabetes so that they can change their lifestyles,” he said.

“All winners will be given awards including cash prizes, medals and certificates. They are now ready to become ambassadors and we welcome others to join and send their applications to contest for the 2024 awards.”
