Govt invites investors into railway industry

MWANZA: INVESTORS have been urged to invest in the railway industry in order to fast track development in other sectors.

The call was made yesterday by the Deputy Minister of Transport David Kihenzile during the launch of the Rail Business and Investment forum.

The two-day forum has been organised by the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC).

He said investing in Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) will help to boost construction of factories in different regions of Mwanza, Kigoma and Tabora.

He said that investment in rail transport will help to double income. Mr Kihenzile said that the investment forum in the railway sector, will help to secure strong investors who will be able to invest in the sector.

He has asked various stakeholders to ensure that they use various opportunities available in the railway sector. Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) Director general Mr Masanja Kadogosa said the corporation will use the two-day meeting to explain various opportunities available in the railway sector.

He said that the corporation has been making railway improvements from Dar-es-Salaam to Tabora and Tabora to Isaka.

Mr Kadogosa said that the modern railway will help to boost development in other sectors such as construction of various factories where the railway passes.

He said that currently Tanzania has more than 2000 kms of railway and was looking forward to 4700 kms more. The TRC boss noted that so far, the government has invested more than 23tri/- into the area, purposely to improve railway transportation.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport Prof Godius Kahyrara asked the public to protect railway infrastructure.

“Those who vandalise railway infrastructure must be reported,” he noted. He added: “TRC is doing a great job of improving our railway lines, we all know that this process is very expensive therefore we need to work together in protecting railway infrastructure,” he said.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner Mr Amos Makalla commended President Samia Suluhu for supporting the construction of Standard Gauge Railway.

He invited investors to exploit opportunities in Mwanza region saying the region has good environment to support business growth.
