YOUTHS in the country have been advised to
spearhead the fight against HIV/Aids for the country to have sustainable
peace and attaining economic development.
This was said in Dar es Salaam yesterday by Peter Mmbando, an organiser for the youth led dialogue on youths’ inclusion in the national efforts to curb the spread of the pandemic amongst young people.
He also advised policymakers to fully involve the youths when formulating and implementing health related policies as they are the key stakeholders for the development of the na- tion.
“Peace and stability depends on young people, so they must participate and join hands with the government’s efforts in fighting HIV and other dis- eases for sustainable economic growth,” insisted Mmbando, who added that youths are the nation’s main workforce providers, creative, peacekeepers and innovators, and therefore if they become vulnerable to diseases, the econ- omy of the nation is at risk.
The dialogue which was organised by Environmental Foundation Development, a youth led organisation, saw participation of youths from different walks of life from Dar es Salaam, where among other things they were advised to use more effort to inform other youths on the dangers of HIV infections and methods to avoid it.
They acknowledged that condoms are available to a great extent, but information on the effects of HIV infections and prevalence are to be addressed at village level.
Ms Anna Lupembe, a Special Seats Member of Parliament (MP), (Katavi Region) who officiated over the dialogue, said the parliamentary health committee is in the final process of updating the 2007 health policy to include all current issues.
She advised young people to help in not only minimising new infections, but to totally eliminate HIV in the country.
“Young people, especially girls, must avoid temptations from rich older men who might infect them with the disease in pursuit of luxuries,” she said.
She also added that the government is aware that industrialisation drive depends on healthy people, which is why it has established dispensaries at village level where HIV related information and medications are provided.
Ms Lupembe also called on youths to engage in sports and spend their time wisely to avoid indulgence in sexual acts.
