Tanzanians have been urged to grab business opportunities in cassava farming since the crop has now found its way through the Chinese market.
This was said earlier today by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa at Parliament when he was officially closing this year’s budget session and giving a speech on the implementation of the 2018/19 financial year.
Majaliwa explained that the governments of Tanzania and Republic of China recently signed an agreement to allow dry cassava from Tanzania to enter the Chinese market.
He added that following the agreement this month, about 74 tonnes of cassava from the country were exported to China through Ching Dow Port. This has promoted the crop to become a cash crop.
“This is an opportunity that Tanzanians should use to produce more cassava and make cassava products, and take them to the international market place,” he added.
Majaliwa also said that the cassava exported to China fails to meet the current demand in that country amounting to 150,000 tonnes per year.
