Tanesco launches operation to curb thefts, sabotage

QUEEN ISACK in Moshi
TANZANIA Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has launched a special operation to identify and arrest people causing losses to the utility in Kilimanjaro Region.

Tanesco Regional Manager, Eng. Mahawa Mkaka, said here yesterday that “we want to bring to an end such losses through this operation by collaborating with security organs in the region.
According to investigations carried out by Tanesco, Hai and Moshi districts have the biggest number of defaulters in the region. “Using power illegally amounts to sabotage to the institution as it impedes provision of good services to our clients,” Mkaka told reporters here.
He said Tanesco with the support of Good Samaritans have arrested two persons with copper wires worth 50m/-. Figures show theft of wires is rampant in Kilimanjaro Region and Simanjiro District in neighbouring Manyara Region, the Tanesco regional chief said.
“Thieves have been causing big losses to Tanesco forcing the company to spend a lot of money to replace the stolen infrastructure,” he said.
Tanesco Public Relations Officer in Kilimanjaro Region, Samuel Mandari, urged the public to avoid using conmen who pose as Tanesco officials.
