MAINLAND envoys Young Africans look to have booked their place in the first round of CAF Champions League following a 5-1 away win over Comoro side Ngaya in the first leg of their preliminary round tie.
Goals from Justin Zullu, Simon Msuva,
Obrey Chirwa, Amissi Tambwe and Thaban Kamusoko apiece wrapped a massive
win for George Lwandamina’s side at the Stade de Moroni.
The Tanzanian champions now have a
comfortable lead to take to home ahead of what appears to be a merely
formality return fixture next week at the National Stadium in Dar es
Salaam. Comoro has always been an easy hunting ground for the Mainland
giants, Young Africans.
They whipped Komorizine 5-1 here back in 2014, completing a 12-1 aggregate win following a 7-0 win in Dar es Salaam.
So they arrived at the Stade de Moroni
their confidence sky high and no wonder the Jangwani Street lads
produced a magnificent display that could well put them on the way to a
first round clash with either Zambian Zesco or Rwandese side APR.
The hosts put up a spirited performance
in the opening exchange and waged a series of attacks into Yanga’s goal,
but could not find the breakthrough against a rigid Yanga defence.
Lwandamina set his team up to counter attack and went close in the 18th
when Haji Mwinyi’s delivery hit the woodwork.
Yanga goalkeeper Deogratius Munishi came
to his team’s rescue in the 24th minute after defender Nadir Haroub’s
slip-up presented Ngaya with a good chance.
Yanga raised the tempo of the game and
earned two futile corners in the 28th and 29th minutes before Fadhul
Fadhil drew a fine save from Munishi at the half hour mark. Tambwe
wasted a glorious chance in the 31st minute when he found himself oneon-
one with Ngaya goalkeeper Said Komando only to fire awkwardly off
target. Yanga’s pressure at the end of the opening half paid dividends
with two quick goals to take a 2-0 lead at the breather.
Mwinyi’s long spotted Chirwa’s run
upfront and the Zambian striker set up his compatriot Zullu for the
opener in the 44th minute. Msuva doubled his team’s lead a minute later
with a stunning shot. The visitors took a comfortable 2-0 lead to the
breather.
Yanga maintained their dominancy on
resumption and Msuva sent two shots off target in the 48th and 50th
minutes respectively. They however bagged in the third goal after 59
minutes. Kamusoko rounded off Ngaya custodian before setting up Chirwa
who coolly slotted home.
Tambwe made it 4-0 after 65 minutes,
connecting home a cross by right full-back Juma Abdul. Ngaya pulled one
back through Said Khalfan in the 66th minute but Yanga added the fifth
seven minutes later through Kamusoko, whose power-packed shot gave the
host team’s goalie no chance.
Yanga had a couple of good chances to
add to their tally but failed to translate them into goals, nonetheless,
they had their job well done as the final whistle arrived. Yanga squad:
Deogratius Munishi, Juma Abdul, Mwinyi Haji, Nadir Haroub, Kelvin
Yondani, Justin Zullu, Simon Msuva, Thabani Kamusoko, Amisi Tambwe,
Obrey Chirwa, Haruna Niyonzima
