ALVAR MWAKYUSA
THE Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation (Dawasco) currently produces 502 million litres of water per day out of the total demand of 544 million litres, it has been disclosed.

Water and Irrigation Minister, Gerson Lwenge made the revelation at a news conference yesterday ahead of the Regional Nile Day to be graced by Vice-President Samia Suluhu tomorrow at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam.
“After completion of expansion projects at Lower and Upper Ruvu; Dawasco now produces water that meet 93 per cent of the demand in Dar es Salaam and some parts of Coast region,” Eng Lwenge explained. The Minister noted, however, that the challenge remains on expanding the water supply network and revamping out of date infrastructure.
“Plans are also underway to make reforms at DAWASCO to improve service delivery,” the Minister disclosed, noting that Kigamboni, Mbagala and Mkuranga will be served with water from Kimbiji boreholes.
On the other hand, Eng Lwenge said about 600 participants are expected to take part in the 11th Regional Nile Day 2017. The theme for this year is; Our Shared Nile-Source of Energy, Food and Water for All.
The participants will be drawn from 10 countries making up the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) namely Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan and South Sudan as well as Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Egypt.
“Each year, the NBI organizes the event to enhance awareness among stakeholders on the benefits of co-operation and consequences of non-cooperation,” he stated.
Over the years, the NBI has focused on activities aimed at assisting member states to achieve their development objectives through Nile Co-operation, Eng Lwenge explained.
“We have worked together as member states to negotiate and agree on more than 35 investment projects contributing to water, food and energy in the region through NBI,” according to the Minister.
The projects will upon completion by member states benefit at least 30 million
