TANZANIA Higher Learning Institutions Students Organisation (TAHLISO) has donated 214 bags of cement worth 2.5m/- for the construction of infrastructure in primary and secondary schools in the country.
The donation was handed over to the
Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Joyce Ndalichako by
TAHLISO Chairman, Mr Stanslaus Kadugalize in a brief ceremony held in
Dar es Salaam. Speaking while handing over the donation, Mr Kadugalize
said the donation was meant to support students in overcoming the
challenges facing them.
On her part, Prof Ndalichako said that
the student’s organisation has been showing something different by being
patriotic, because when she expected that the students were going to
meet her to present their grievances, it turned out to be quite the
opposite. She assured the organisation that the donation will be used
for the intended purpose.
The minister, however, called upon other
stakeholders to support the education sector in the country because it
is still in need of their support despite the efforts being taken by the
government to improve infrastructure in its institutions, including
schools, colleges and universities.
She said for example a total of 3bn/-
has been set aside for the rehabilitation of infrastructure in old
schools, 14bn/- for 81 primary and secondary schools in 53 councils and
507 classrooms, 1,287 toilet holes, nine dormitories and a dining hall.
The minister further said that 10.7bn/-
has been set aside for the rehabilitation of ten teachers’ colleges and
construction of hostels for the University of Dar es Salaam students.
She called upon stakeholders to support
the government efforts of improving education in the country,
particularly in addressing the challenges which emerged after the
government started to provide free education.
