FORMER First Lady Salma Kikwete has praised efforts by former First Lady Anna Mkapa’s charitable organization, Women in Poverty Eradication (WIPE), to empower women to improve their production.
Salma, who made a visit at the Mwalimu
Julius Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds in the city with the wife of the Prime
Minister, Mary Majaliwa, and other spouses of senior government
officials, said women entrepreneurs have continued demonstrating
positive improvements in their products.
“From processing to packaging now meets
international standards. It’s not easy to differentiate between locally
made products and those imported,” she said. “This has been made
possible due to commitment and struggles made by the former First Lady
to support women in business across the country.”
She explained the quality of locally
made products is very high and therefore efforts to market the products
are heavily required. She recalled that should more women get empowered
they can be a good catalyst of changing the country’s economy.
“Women are playing vital role in our
families and the society at large, yet are responsible of footing bills
in most households ... the initiative by Mama Mkapa is helping change
lives among many Tanzanians.”
Mama Kikwete who runs Wanawake na
Maendeleo Foundation (WAMA) said the most challenge facing women in
business is access to quality packaging services.
“We understand as the government move to
have an industrial-powered economy support to women entrepreneurs to
access quality packaging will not be underestimated,” she noted.
More than 40 Women associations from
across the country are taking part in this year’s Dar es Salaam
International Trade Fair under the umbrella of WIPE
