Deputy Minister of State in the
President’s Office, (Regional Administration and Local Governments),
Suleiman Jaffo, said HESLB has no special allocation for Zanzibar
students, saying the loans were for the qualified applicants.
“Even in the (loan) application forms,
there is nowhere the applicant is required to state which place of the
union they are coming from… the board recognizes all applicants as
Tanzanians,” said the minister.
He was answering a question by Muhammed
Amour Muhammed (Bumbwini - CUF) who demanded to know the amount of money
allocated for applicants from the isles.
The legislator claimed that despite the
higher education being a union matter, there had been a serious problem
of Zanzibar students lacking loans for pursuance of their academic
careers.
Jaffo said the HESLB issues loans to
needy Tanzanian applicants with admission in higher learning
institutions. Priority is given on applicants pursuing gas and oil
engineering, health sciences, science and mathematics teaching as well
as agriculture and water engineering.
However, orphans and people with
physical disabilities also get special consideration. He said the
government acknowledges existing opportunities in all higher learning
institutions in the country, with students from the mainland studying in
Zanzibar and vice-versa.
