Briefing journalists yesterday, a
representative of legislators from the camp, Mr James Ole Millya
(Simanjiro-Chadema), said the opposition has submitted the petition
based on six grounds. The MP went on to accuse Dr Tulia of incompetence
and ill-treating parliamentarians from the opposition since she assumed
the position.
“The Deputy Speaker has breached
Standing Order 8(b) which prohibits favouritism and 5 (1), which
requires the chair to adhere to standards and traditions of speakers in
other parliaments,” Millya claimed.
The MP claimed the petition had been
signed by 92 legislators “representing other MPs who are discontented
with the Deputy Speaker.” “We now wait for the office of the Speaker to
work the petition and present it to the House for deliberations,” Mr
Millya told journalists.
At the heart of the matter is the
decision by Dr Ackson to send out of the National Assembly’s debating
chamber all MPs from the opposition early this week after they defied
her orders.
Dr Ackson had on Wednesday evening
challenged the MPs to submit a petition through proper channels rather
than boycotting sessions which she chairs. Since the opposition
legislators were thrown out by Dr Ackson they have been marching out of
the debating chamber whenever the Deputy Speaker is on the Chair.
However, legislators from the ruling CCM
have rallied behind the Deputy Speaker, urging her to maintain the
status of the House by upholding the Standing Orders
