“President Ali Mohamed Shein and
ministers here must follow the footsteps of President Magufuli and
ministers in the Union government, where they have shown zero tolerance
to dishonest officers,” the backbenchers led by Mr Mohamed Said Mohamed
(Mpendae) said.
Lazy and dishonest civil servants have
been named locally as ‘Majipu’ (body boils) which must be lanced
(kutumbuliwa), as introduced by President John Pombe Magufuli when
taking up the post in his bid to fight corruption and indiscipline in
public offices.
The backbenchers here have the feeling
that authorities in Zanzibar government have not taken swift action
against dishonest civil servants yet corruption and financial
indiscipline is rampant.
In response to the concerns raised by
the backbenchers, the Minister without portfolio Mr Said Soud Said
informed the House, “We ministers and Dr Shein are determined to spare
no ‘boils’, all will be lanced’ as promised by the president.”
The minister admitted that despite calls
for change, many civil servants including executives are still corrupt,
operating on ‘business as usual’ attitude, and unnecessary absenteeism
at work is rampant.
