Guard against cyber crime in making

ANNE ROBI
THE government has embarked on formulation of National cyber security strategy to protect the country and its people from cybercrime, it has been confirmed.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication Ms Katolina Kippa said yesterday in Dar es Salaam that the strategy (National Cyber Security Strategy) is being formulated by the government and support from Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO).
“Our government has done quite a lot in making sure that our country and its people are safe from cybercrime and is willing to do whatever it takes to make the cyber environment crime free,” she said.
Ms Kippa made the revelation when addressing the participants at a four-day workshop for formulation of the National cyber security strategy of Tanzania. The workshop was held at Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA).
She said experts from CTO have set off the project and facilitated the establishment of a steering committee and working groups for the implementation of the strategy.
“The CTO has also trained the steering committee, working groups, on the CTO approach to developing the strategy and are approaching an agreement on roles and responsibilities of the CTO, the steering committee, projects and timeframes,” she noted.
On the other hand, the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector in the Ministry of Works, Transport and Communication Mr Peter Philip said that the formulation of the national cyber security would help the country take control measures on local communications.
According to the CTO Secretary General to Tanzania, the strategy would help the country take coordination steps against duplication of activities, and generally increase effectiveness.
