THE National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), Songea Zone, has sold 95,000 tons of grains to regions with food deficit and the World Food Programme (WFP), earning 36.1bn/-.
The Head of the Zone, Amos Mtafya,
revealed the figures when briefing Deputy Minister for Education,
Science, Technology and Vocational Training, Stella Manyanya, who
visited the centre to buy five tons for Nyasa constituency residents
whose crops have been washed away by floods.
Mtafya said 88,000 were sold to regions
with food scarcity while WFP bought 10,000 tons for its education
support initiative programme and 8,000 tons were transferred to
NFRA-Dodoma Zone.
The grain has 11,000 tons remaining.
Manyanya appealed to her electorate to invest more in other economic
development projects as the central government has put in place a
conducive environment for industrialisation.
“But you cannot achieve all these if you
are not well informed; invest in education and health. Let’s change our
mindsets as there is room for a revitalised economy,” she said. The
deputy minister donated 21m/- for renovation and construction of health
centres, schools and dispensaries.
She said the government has signed an
agreement for the construction of Mbinga-Mbamba Bay road to tarmac level
as a way of attaining the goal of industrialisation.
She revealed that to provide reliable
transport on Lake Nyasa, three vessels — two of which will be for cargo
and one for passengers — will be brought to ply Mbeya and Mbamba Bay
