IN effort to remain economically stable, Zanzibar government has appealed to its public servants to observe financial discipline and cut down unnecessary expenditure.
“At this period of shortage of funds,
let us make sure that we utilize properly the money we collect, so that
the government achieves its development goals,” Ambassador Seif Ali
Iddi, the Second Vice-President, said here.
Mr Iddi made the statement at a meeting
with civil servants in his office, for the first time since he was
reappointed to the position, following the March 20 re-run of the
general election.
Mr Iddi said that the government had to
spend a lot of money within a short period including conducting a fresh
election, which was strongly opposed and boycotted by the main
opposition party, the Civic United Front (CUF).
“Currently there is shortage of funds, but the problem will be overcome by proper expenditure.
We are prepared to run our offices and
programmes by using funds collected from available sources,” he said. Mr
Iddi also asked members of staff in his office to avoid intrigue and
hate at the workplace because it is unethical, it goes against religious
teachings and undermines development.
“Everyone should work hard,” he said commending the employees for good work in the past five years.
The Acting Principal Secretary, Second
Vice-President’s Office, Mr Ahmad Kassim, on behalf of the staff,
congratulated Mr Iddi for being reappointed to the position. He promised
continued cooperation
