Govt pledges to extend support for BRAC

Majority has pledged to extend full support needed for the successful implementation of BRAC’s Livelihood Enhancement through Agricultural Development (LEAD) project.



Speaking during Awareness workshop here, the Mwanza regional Commissioner, Mr John Mongela said that the government in Mwanza will extend the support to ensure the project excels in its implementation.
The RC who was represented by Ms Candidah Kyamani from the Mwanza regional secretariat said that the support will enable new entrepreneurs engage in the production of maize and kitchen production that will have a great impact in improving people’s livelihood through the Lead project.
He noted that Lead project of the BRAC Maendeleo Tanzania which is busy carrying out market assessment aimed at establishing existing opportunities in the market system and existing gaps, organising facilitation workshops for training both government and private actors.
RC said that BRAC through Lead Project has successfully organised 80 facilitation workshops, trained 89 agro vets/dealers for accessing improved inputs, trained 85 Maize and 83Poultry traders to buy the products from farmers, conducted 309 farmers field days, disseminated modern farming technologies through maize and poultry demonstration farms.
Through the efforts, Mr Mongela said that the technology will enable smallholder farmers to increase maize harvest and believes will further consolidate agricultural activities in the region.
The BRAC Lead project Livestock Manager, Dr Muhammad Abdul Barek, said that Lead programme is introducing integrated support package to small-holder farmers in agriculture and poultry to enable them increase their profits and create new jobs in rural areas.
Dr Barek hinted that the first component of the project will develop linkages between producers and markets and the second component will establish a strong community- based supply chain to supply extension services and its inputs
