THE Director General of the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA), Engineer Suleiman Said Suleiman (pictured), is no more; he died while on a swimming workout in the Indian Ocean on Monday morning at Kigamboni in Dar es Salaam.
According to TAA’s Director of Legal
Affairs and Communications, Mr Ramadhan Maleta, the TAA boss had a
routine of taking a swimming exercise every morning before reporting to
work.
“On his routine work out on Monday at
between 06:00 and 07:00 in the morning, one of the people he was
swimming with realised that Eng Suleiman had lost balance and together
with other people they helped him out of the water,” Mr Maleta
explained.
He was thereafter rushed to Aga Khan
Hospital for treatment where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. “We at
TAA are mourning the loss of an exemplary leader with vast experience
in management of airports,” Mr Maleta said with grief.
He described the late Suleiman as a
loving person who knew by names almost all employees of TAA across the
country. Among others, Eng Suleiman will be remembered for spearheading
construction of Terminal 3, which is nearing completion at the Julius
Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam.
The deceased is survived by wife and three children. He was laid to rest yesterday at the Kisutu graveyard in the city.
He worked in the airport industry for
over 30 years in positions such as Airport Civil Engineer at the Dar es
Salaam International Airport and Senior Engineer for Design and Planning
at the Directorate of Aerodromes.
Eng Suleiman also worked as Chief
Engineer in the Directorate of Aerodromes at the Ministry of
Communications and Transport as well as Director of Engineering and
Technical Services at the TAA.
He held other positions such as Board
Chair of the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Company (DAWASCO) and a
member of the Board of Directors at Air Tanzania Company Ltd (ATCL)
along with being the Chairman of the Board of Directors at SN-Tech (T)
Ltd.
Eng Suleiman obtained his Masters of
Business Administration (MBA) from Maastrict/ ESAIMI and his Diploma in
Port Management from the University of New Orleans.
He also obtained his Diploma in Airport
Engineering at the Civil Aviation Training Centre in Singapore and his
Bachelors of Engineer from the University of Mysore in India
