Medical doctors for equal salary

NASHON KENNEDY in Mwanza

THE government has said that it will ensure that all doctors in government referral hospitals in the country are paid the same rates of salaries according to their profession and from now on no any doctor will be paid a different salary rate.

The directive was made yesterday by the Minister of Health, Community Development, Gender, the Elderly and Children, Ms Ummy Mwalimu, when she was speaking to Mwanza regional referral hospitals workers after she had inaugurated the new MSD Community outlet, the Seko Toure pharmacy.
He said the purpose of such action is to enable all doctors to work with high morale and improve the delivery of medical services in the country. “I have already directed my colleagues in the ministry to ensure that all doctors in referral hospitals are paid the same salaries.
It is impossible for a doctor who works at Muhimbili National Hospital to be paid a higher salary than the one working at Mwanza regional referral hospital, Sekou Toure, or in Katavi region.
This does not make any sense”, she argued. She said the government’s goal now is to empower all doctors across the country and create a good working environment for them including providing them with modern equipment.
The minister stated that the move will remove the notion that some doctors are better than others and it would encourage other doctors to work hard to serve the people.
In response to a challenge of provision of health services in the country, she said the government will ensure that every Tanzanian is registered with the health insurance in order to enable him or her to access those services efficiently.
Ms Mwalimu urged both regional and district commissioners to begin motivating people to join the health insurance and community heath fund (CHF) to overcome the challenges of high medical costs.
He commended Mwanza Regional Commissioner Mr Magesa Mulongo and the Acting Mwanza Regional Medical Officer (RMO), Mr Onesmo Rwekendera, for being the first in regional level and in the zone to establish the new MSD pharmacy
