THE Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Phillip Mpango, has vowed to work round the clock to increase domestic revenue collection. Speaking to journalists when handing over his former office at the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) headquarters, yesterday, Dr Mpango declared his intention to move the nation albeit slowly away from donor dependency.
“I don’t like to be a minister who goes
around begging for aid, therefore, I will direct all my efforts to
increasing domestic revenue collection. We are behind on this as a
country, we all need to work harder, uphold integrity and pay relevant
taxes to government as required by laws,” he explained.
He reiterated his commitment to build a
revenue system that is friendly to business people and investors, urging
both to ensure taxes are remitted on time to the government.
Dr Mpango described the new TRA Acting
Commissioner General Alphayo Kidata as a polite person, who works with
focus and drive for results, noting that he is best suited to manage the
authority to meet its targeted collections and instill integrity.
“TRA has very good experts, it’s just a
few of them that are tarnishing this institution’s good name. The acting
commissioner general should continue cleaning TRA of these few people
tarnishing the institution’s name and my personal number is still on,
anyone with information regarding TRA officers should call me as well,”
he explained.
Before the appointment as TRA Acting
Commissioner General, Kidata was the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry
of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development.
Explaining how he managed to increase
revenue collection in just three weeks as the TRA commissioner general,
Dr Mpango said daily follow ups of revenue collected in all offices
countrywide was among the reasons and acting to address challenges that
