PRESIDENT, John Magufuli has directed that funds amounting to 4bn/- earlier allocated for the Independence Day celebrations on December 9 should be used for expansion of the Mwenge-Morocco road.
Dr Magufuli instructed that the
construction work on the 4.3 kilometre should start immediately to ease
traffic congestion along the route, according to a statement issued on
Monday by the Directorate of Presidential Communications.
He made the instruction during a meeting
with the Chief Executive of Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads),
Engineer Patrick Mfugale at the State House in Dar es Salaam yesterday,
the statement read in part.
The construction work will see the
stretch of the road expanded to five lanes from the current three and
the money has been already been disbursed to Tanroads.
Last week, the Chief Secretary, Ombeni
Sefue announced that this year there will be no official ceremony to
celebrate the Independence anniversary and instead the public should
engage in nation building work, including a nationwide cleaning campaign
to check re-occurrence of filthy-borne diseases.
Ambassador Sefue noted then that the
amount of money allocated for the celebrations will be channeled to
other development projects. Meanwhile, Dr Magufuli yesterday met and
held meeting at State House with former National Chairman of Civic
United Front (CUF), Prof Ibrahim Lipumba.
During the talks, Prof Lipumba
congratulated President Magufuli for being elected to the position and
his excellent speech during the inauguration of the parliament in Dodoma
recently. On his part, Dr Magufuli hailed Prof Lipumba for his
unwavering stand against corruption and wished him well in his work.
