Dar es Salaam. Dar es Salaam Region registered
more voters than those targeted during the 14 days of listing, according
to information released by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) on
Wednesday.
The listing, which was conducted using the
biometic voter registration (BVR) technology, saw the region surpass the
target by six per cent.
The region has registered 2,827,948 voters, equivalent to 100.62 per cent against the target of 2,810,423.
The
NEC data shows that Kinondoni District is leading with the highest
number of registered voters. It has managed to list 1,140,312 voters,
equivalent to 103.4 per cent of its target to register 1,102,565 voters.
In
Temeke 886,564 voters have been registered, equivalent to 98.9 per cent
against the target of listing 896,142 voters, while Ilala registered
701,072 voters, equivalent to 98.7 per cent of the targeted 811,716
voters.
Nec said in a statement that the process has
been a great success despite numerous challenges recorded in most parts
of the country.
Since Saturday, NEC has embarked on the process of screening all those who have been registered.
Registration
in the country’s key port and commercial city took off with various
challenges ranging from uneven distribution of BVR machines and claims
that some densely-populated areas received very few of them.
According
to the National Bureau of Statistics, nearly three million people in
the city are eligible for registration. There were fears that the ten
days allocated ealier for the listing would not be enough due to
technical glitches. As a result Nec gave an additional four days to
complete the listing.
