In Summary
Arusha. The government has agreed with
Parliament to extend the ongoing sitting for 10 more days in a bid to
give the august House ample time to debate and approve pending Bills.
Addressing about 1,000 teachers meeting at
Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge on the outskirts of the city late on Tuesday, Mr
Kikwete said among the pending Bills included one on the formation of
the teachers’ civil commission.
Once established, the commission would enable
teachers to have a single body that oversees their profession, Mr
Kikwete said amid applause from participants of the Teachers Trade Union
(TTU) annual general meeting.
TTU secretary-general Yahya Msulwa had asked the
President to ensure the commission was created before his tenure elapsed
in October this year.
Mr Kikwete said, in addition to the commission,
another body would also be created for the registration of teachers from
both the public and private sectors.
“Someone who will not be registered by the body,
will be regarded as a bogus teacher,” said the President. He added that
during the extended time, the House will also discuss the information
Bill, which has so far been controversial.
