JK appoints Mwandosya Mbeya varsity chancellor

President Jakaya Kikwete has appointed the minister of State in the President’s Office (Special Duties), Prof Mark Mwandosya, Chancellor of the Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST). A press statement issued by the permanent secretary in the ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, Dr Patrick Makungu, said MUST was upgraded to university level from the former Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) on March 29, 2012. “It is an honour to be appointed by the President as chancellor of the new university,” said Prof Mwandosya yesterday when reached by phone in India where he went last week for a routine medical check-up. Prof Mwandosya added: “I will repay this honour by working closely with the chairperson of the university’s council, Prof Penina Mlama, the Vice-Chancellor Prof Msambichaka, the senate, lecturers and the university community towards the implementation of its vision and mission.”
“It is an honour and it is with deep humility that I join such an exclusive ‘club’,” he said in reference to other university chancellors, including the late Fulgence Kazaura who was chancellor for University of Dar es Salaam and retired President Benjamin Mkapa, the chancellor for University of Dodoma.

Others are Al Noor Kassum of the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro region, retired President Ali Hassan Mwinyi of the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Vice-President Dr Mohamed Ghalib Bilal of Nelson Mandela Institute of Technology and retired Prime Minister Cleopa Msuya of Ardhi University.
Prof Mwandosya has served in various ministerial posts, including water, environment, and communication and transport.
