Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
They are among measures being implemented to improve security at the airport that have been announced by the Director of Corporate Services of the Kilimanjaro Airport Development Company (KADCO), Bakari Murusuri.
He explained: “The idea is to involve the villagers in regular security patrols.” Local authorities are well informed on their role in ensuring the facility is secure, he said.
The airport security committee has made drug trafficking a permanent agenda of its monthly meetings. There is also increased cooperation with airlines on exchange of crime-related information.
“This is basically on passengers suspected to have been involved in drug trafficking,” he explained.
The action by KADCO is in response to a call made two months ago by the Transport Minister, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, who asked its management to tighten security.
Murusuri also announced plans to start marketing the airport facility more vigorously on the international arena.
He said: “We want to see more airlines using this airport which is the main gateway to Tanzania’s tourist destinations.”
He said KADCO wants to attract more regional and international airlines to use the facility.
Apart from online marketing, the management will be taking part in international meetings on airline routes, he said.
On Wednesday Dr Mwakyembe visited KIA and had indoor talks with KADCO officials. The press briefing earlier arranged with him was suspended for unknown reasons.
On November, he warned public officials to stop facilitating drug traffickers who had started using the facility.
