Govt orders Tanesco to act on embezzlement of 162m/-

Vice President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal
The government has ordered Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (Tanesco) to drag to court all persons involved in the embezzlement of 162m/- that was set to compensate evictees who were moved to make room for the firm’s infrastructures in the region.

Vice President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilali, gave the order during the inauguration of five power stations - Kiyungi, Lawate, Himo, KCMC and Makayuni early this week when the Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioners, Leonidas Gama, informed him of unpaid residents.

“The government will not tolerate such characters who are discouraging investors and donors…I order you to drag them all to court,” Dr Bilali instructed.

çommenting on the new power stations, Gama told Dr Bilali that despite some few setbacks, the new power hubs will help enhance electricity supply and hence curb persistent blackouts.

Bilal noted that reliable power will also ensure economic development in the region.
“The project is a saviour to Kilimanjaro residents, it will increase economic opportunities and address persistent power cuts,” Gama said.

Energy and Mineral Minister, Prof Sospeter Muhongo explained that the five projects have cost over 44bn/- and it is expected that by 2015, the projects will have the capacity to produce excess electricity that can also be exported to neighbouring countries.
