NBS launches nationwide surveys to boost investment...

DODOMA:THE National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has launched four nationwide surveys aimed at strengthening data on business activities and improving the ...

country’s investment and economic planning frameworks.

The surveys will help the government, private sector, non-governmental organisations and researchers design programmes to improve the business environment and attract investment, while also updating key economic indicators used to measure the country’s gross output and overall economic production.

Speaking to journalists in Dodoma on Wednesday, Government Statistician General Dr Amina Msengwa said the data collection exercise began on March 11 and is expected to run for two months until May 10, 2026.

The surveys include the Comprehensive Business Establishment Survey, the Informal Sector Survey, the Financial Services Survey for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (FinScope MSMEs) and the Industrial Production Survey.

Dr Msengwa said the studies will collect detailed information on both formal and informal economic activities, including industrial production, employment, investment and business conditions across the country.

“The objective is to obtain reliable data on the performance of businesses and industries in order to understand trends in business and industrial growth in the country,” she said.

According to her, the FinScope MSME Survey will provide important statistics for measuring implementation of the National Financial Inclusion Framework Phase III (NFIF III) and the Financial Sector Development Master Plan (FSDMP).

The survey will generate statistical evidence on access to financial services such as credit, savings, insurance and digital financial services among micro, small and medium enterprises.

“The results will help strengthen efforts to develop the financial sector and improve financial products and services tailored to the needs of small businesses,” she said.

The Industrial Production Survey will also provide key indicators, including the number of industries operating in different regions, types of products manufactured, the year industries started production and the number of employees.

Other information to be collected includes production costs, labour expenses, revenues, fixed assets and investment plans, as well as challenges facing industries.

Dr Msengwa said the surveys will also generate statistics on productivity, capital formation and economic linkages between sectors, helping the government assess the contribution of different activities to the national economy.

She added that the findings will support implementation of the National Development Vision 2050, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, the African Union Agenda 2063 and the East African Vision 2050.

The surveys will be conducted nationwide across 1,518 selected enumeration areas, involving 8,624 businesses and institutions and 4,245 industries.

A total of 713 enumerators and 69 supervisors have been deployed to ensure quality data collection using digital devices such as tablets and mobile phones.

Dr Msengwa urged citizens and institutions to cooperate with enumerators and provide accurate information, assuring that all data collected will remain confidential in accordance with the Statistics Act, Chapter 351.

She said detailed reports from the surveys are expected to be compiled and officially launched in June 2026.
