CHATO: VICE-PRESIDENT Ambassador Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi has called on all Tanzanians to embrace selflessness, courage and self-reliance as guiding principles in honouring the legacy of the late President Dr John Pombe Magufuli.
Dr Nchimbi made the call yesterday while representing President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan at a commemoration in Chato, marking five years since the passing of the late Magufuli.
The event was attended by among others government officials, religious leaders, and members of the public.
The memorial began with a Holy Mass led by Rt Rev Severine Niwemugizi, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Rulenge- Ngara, followed by various activities dedicated to remembering and praying for Dr Magufuli, who passed away on March 17, 2021.
“Although the late Dr Magufuli is no longer physically with us, he continues to live in the hearts of Tanzanians through his work and vision. The government remains committed to honouring and advancing his legacy,” Dr Nchimbi said.

The commemoration highlighted the enduring impact of Dr Magufuli’s leadership, emphasising his dedication to national development and the values he championed during his time in office.
Elaborating on the three values, Dr Nchimbi urged Tanzanians to embrace hard work and commitment, echoing Dr Magufuli’s “Hapa Kazi Tu” slogan, which promoted diligence as the backbone of both personal and national development.
He highlighted the late president’s courage and decisiveness, praising his bold moves in tackling corruption, inefficiency and practices that hindered national progress. On self-reliance, Dr Nchimbi reminded citizens that the country’s future depends on their own efforts and effective use of local resources, rather than relying on external aid.
The Vice-President also announced that the government is taking practical steps to honour Dr Magufuli’s legacy, revealing that President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan has allocated 100m/- to complete the construction of his memorial museum in Chato.
“This initiative shows the government’s commitment to preserving Dr Magufuli’s legacy for current and future generations,” Dr Nchimbi said.
Meanwhile, President of Zanzibar Dr Hussein Mwinyi, underscored that the best way to honour Dr Magufuli is by upholding his commitment to accountability, public service particularly to the underprivileged and the protection of national resources.
Dr Mwinyi further pointed out that Dr Magufuli was a strong advocate of the Union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, ensuring that citizens from both sides benefited in line with the vision of the nation’s founding leaders.
He described him as a champion of ordinary citizens’ rights who addressed their challenges, while strengthening discipline in public service through firm action against corruption and misuse of public resources.

Dr Mwinyi also commended President Samia for continuing to implement Dr Magufuli’s vision, calling on Tanzanians to preserve peace, unity and solidarity as pillars of socio-economic development.
“On behalf of the government and people of Zanzibar, I reaffirm a continued cooperation with the Union government,” said Dr Mwinyi.
Delivering a message on behalf of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Geita, Rt Rev Flavian Kassala, urged Tanzanians to reflect on their own lives as they honour Dr Magufuli, so that they too may leave behind a legacy worthy of remembrance and prayer.
He added that the Church will continue to pray for the nation to maintain peace, stability, unity and inclusive development for all.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Jesca Magufuli, daughter of the late Dr Magufuli, and CCM Special Seats MP said her father is remembered for many things.
She noted that although he was widely known as a leader, minister and President, to them he was a hardworking father who strongly believed in hardwork as the foundation of personal and national development.
She said that to the late Dr Magufuli, Tanzania was not merely a geographical entity, but also a symbol of humility and responsibility for the present generation who emphasised the duty of every citizen to build and safeguard the nation for future generations.
“He believed that true leadership is one that listens and takes action. That is why many of the policies he championed were directly aimed at improving the lives of ordinary citizens. He believed Tanzania must stand on its own strength, and that national resources should benefit its people,” said Ms Magufuli.
She emphasised that as the nation commemorates the five-year anniversary of his passing, his legacy extends far beyond mere remembrance. It continues to thrive through the ongoing actions and progress of the country.
She pointed out that infrastructure developed during his leadership continues to serve citizens, while the policies he promoted still shape the nation’s direction. His legacy, she said, lives on in the hearts of Tanzanians through the confidence and belief he instilled in them.
