Northern railway network construction to cost 23bn/

DODOMA: DEPUTY Minister for Works, David Kihenzile has said that the government is spending 23bn/- for the construction of the Northern railway network including the part that connects to the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA).

Mr Kihenzile made the statement in Parliament yesterday when responding to a main question posed by Hai legislator, Saasisha Mafuwe (CCM).

In his question, the MP asked about government’s plan to reignite the railway line that connects KIA for cargo transportation.

In response, the deputy minister said that the government, through the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC), had continuously been improving railway infrastructures including the lines that had stalled for some years.

“Also in the 2023/24 fiscal year, TRC allocated 23bn/- for the upgrading of the railway in the north corridor including that part that connects the KIA airport,’’ he added.

In the next budget (2024/25) presented recently in Dodoma, the Works Minister, Professor Makame Mbarawa told the House that the government was contemplating on how best to merge the current Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) so as to tap the potential opportunity of a vast railway network that the country was endowed with.
