SHINYANGA: BARRICK Gold has said it keeps on working closely with stakeholders on various initiatives aimed at protecting the environment with ultimate goal to cut down greenhouse emissions.
This was said by the Barrick Bulyanhulu Environmental Manager, Mr Arespicius Onesmo during the climax day of the World Environment Day, where the mining firm participated in cleaning and tree planting activities at Bugarama Health Centre and Buyange Secondary School in Msalala district of Shinyanga region.
“We continue to play a positive role in environmental protection initiatives within and outside the mining surroundings,” he said.
In this year’s Environmental Day, he said Barrick Bulyanhulu collaborated with the surrounding communities to clean the environment and plant trees in various areas, including the Bugarama Health Centre and Buyange Secondary School.
“We are working closely with the surrounding communities in various initiatives aimed at protecting the environment, being part the mining firm’s corporate social responsibility,” he said.

Last year, Barrick achieved the target it set for itself for 2025 of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 15 per cent. It’s Scope one and two greenhouse gas emissions have now been reduced by 16 per cent against its 2018 baseline. Barrick will continue to reduce these emissions, with the long-term goal to be Net Zero by 2050.
Mining development could indeed be done in a way that stimulated wider socioeconomic development and was climate-responsible.
The Acting Director for Msalala District Council, Mr Humphrey Peter, commended Barrick Bulyanhulu for sponsoring the World Environment Day event in the district as well as participating actively in various activities aimed at protecting the environment.
