MINISTER for Information, Communication, and Information Technology, Nape Nnauye has called on the country's mobile companies to
enhance telecommunications infrastructure in remote and underserved communities.Nape made the call here recently when visited Kinua Village in Namelock ward, Kiteto District to one of the telecommunication towers in the area.
He said that mobile companies need to do more in serving people who are in the peripherals to complement the government’s efforts of bringing a digital economy.
"As government, we want to see all people get reliable and better communication services," he said, lauding some of the telecommunication companies for their efforts to invest more in rural areas.
The tower, funded by UCSAF and the World Bank under the DTP project, symbolizes a vital step towards improving connectivity in areas that have long been disconnected from vital communication networks.
The Minister, impressed by the level of development, saying the mobile firm is committed to bridging the digital divide and empowering local communities through technology.
Nape also said, "The site visit and the inspection of the tower has been enlightening. Initiatives like these are pivotal in ensuring that every citizen, regardless of location, has access to essential communication services."
He further noted: “Namelock tower alongside the other 65 that have started operating, proves how telecom companies are truly committed to support and achieving the government’s course of bridging the digital divide across the country.”
The impact of these towers on the villagers is expected to be transformative. Improved connectivity will enable villagers to access a wide range of services, including financial inclusion through mobile saving and mobile money services.
According to him, access to communication services, data, and content will also be vastly improved, fostering digital inclusion and providing essential services to every site.
“The activation of these towers represents our unwavering commitment to connect the unconnected and empower communities through technology. We are grateful for the endorsement from the Honorable Minister, which underscores the importance of our efforts in bridging the digital divide and driving socio-economic development,” said Airtel Business Manager, Salim Ngululu.
