ARUSHA: If Tanzania’s economy remains resilient to global shocks, President Samia Suluhu Hassan will address workers, according to Vice President Dr Philip Mpango.
Dr. Mpango, who represented President Samia during the Workers’ Day celebrations nationally hosted in Arusha, said the Head of State instructed him to share such a message with the workers gathered at Sheikh Amri Abeid Karume Stadium on Wednesday.
Quoting various international and local reports, the VP said Tanzania’s economy has proved resilient towards global shocks, including Ukraine-Russia and Middle East conflicts.
As workers eagerly await the President’s ‘message’, VP Mpango mentioned that to improve the welfare of public servants, the government has set aside a total of 150.87bn/- for annual salary increments in the forthcoming fiscal year.

In the 2023/24 financial year, the State paid a total of 153.9bn/- for the same purpose.
He added that in the 2024/25 financial year, the government plans to spend a total of 252.7bn/- on the promotion of 219,924 workers.
Earlier, leaders of the Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA) asked the government to review the pension formula and salary increments, among the pressing issues reflected in this year’s May Day celebrations.
The 2024 May Day theme is “Salary Increment is the Foundation for Better Benefits and Protection against Hardships in Life”.
Reacting to some of the issues raised at the well-attended event today, the VP said the government has welcomed TUCTA’s advice to review the pension benefits formula, stating that the matter will be handed over to actuarial science experts for a review of pension funds to advise the government accordingly.
“No one is ready to see retirees suffer for their pensions,” the VP said, insisting that the experts’ report will shed light on measures to be taken.
