KATAVI: KATAVI Region has extensively executed various development projects worth 1.24tri/- funded by the government during three years of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership.
The immense achievement was recorded in the construction of magnificent Karema Port terminal on Lake Tanganyika.
Katavi Region, which was established in 2012 is strategically located, bordering Burundi and eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) across Lake Tanganyika.
Also, the great achievement was recorded in education, energy, health, road infrastructures and agriculture sectors despite teething challenges encountered.
Katavi Regional Commissioner (RC) Ms Mwanamvua Mrindoko made revelation here in Mpanda Municipality over the weekend, when speaking on the successes recorded by the region in three years of President Samia’s leadership.
In marine infrastructure the RC said during the three years of President Samia, the Karema Port terminal was built at the cost of 47.9bn/-.
The newly built port terminal started its operations on September 1st, 2022 making a new milestone in the country’s shipping industry and cross border trade.
“New Karema Port serves as a new trade corridor connecting the southern part of DRC, Burundi and Zambia to Dar es Salaam Port,” she explained.
She further explained that the government under President Samia’s leadership decided to construct the new port terminal to exploit the untapped great potentials of cross – border trade with East African Community (EAC) block.
RC Mrindoko said the citizen are grateful to President Samia for realising the potentiality of the strategic port terminal to Katavi Region, national economic development and its position as the trade hub.
On energy sector, the RC said the citizens in Katavi now breathe a sigh of relief since the region is set to be connected to the power grid by June this year.
Expounding, achievement notched in education sector, the RC said at least 28 schools out of which 12 are secondary schools and 16 primary schools have been constructed in the past three years.
Moreover, the region has managed to complete the construction of one special girls’ secondary school at the cost of 3bn/-. “We have also constructed 773 classrooms and made 24,000 desks,” she explained.
She further explained that currently, the region has 56 public health facilities including 20 health centres, and 36 dispensaries.
Ms Irene Samuel (31) resident of Majimoto Ward in Mlele District hailed the government under President Samia, for improving social services including building of health facilities and roads infrastructures.
“The construction of health facilities, water, schools and roads in rural settings is crucial because for a long – time citizens especially women and children had to trek long distances to seek either medical treatment, water or education,” she explained.
