Tanzania reaffirms heightened ties with Indonesia, Russia

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed commitment to heightening ties with Indonesia and Russian Federation.

The Head of State expressed the country’s commitment yesterday when she extended her warm congratulations to both Prabowo Subianto, the President-elect of Indonesia and President Vladimir Putin on his re-election as the President of the Russian Federation.

President Samia sent the congratulatory message through her X official account congratulating President-Elect Subianto, on his victory in the 2024 Indonesian presidential election.

“This momentous outcome for you and your country is a testimony of the confidence that the People of Indonesia have in you. Rest assured of our continued cooperation with Indonesia,” President Samia wrote.

Indonesia’s President-elect Subianto has been elected president of the world’s third-biggest democracy, the elections commission said on March 20, 2024.

Dr Samia’s message also extended to President Putin conveyed similar sentiments of congratulations and goodwill.

She expressed Tanzania’s government pleasure at Putin’s re-election, acknowledging it as a reflection of the trust and support he enjoys from the people of Russia.

“On behalf of the Government and the People of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to His Excellency, President Vladimir Putin on being re-elected as the President of the Russian Federation,” her post reads in part.

The Head of State said Tanzania is looking forward to continue working together to strengthen the bilateral relations between Tanzania and Russia.

Diplomatic relations between Russia (USSR at the time) and Tanzania were established on December 11, 1961.

Through Dar es Salaam, which became a second home to freedom fighters all over the continent, the Soviet Union provided material support to national liberation movements in South Africa, Mozambique, South Rhodesia and Namibia.

In recent years, Russia’s relations with Africa and Tanzania in particular, have picked up a new momentum.

With continuous political dialogue, stronger economic, humanitarian and cultural ties, cooperation on matters of security and counter-terrorism, Russia is in close touch with continental and regional organisations, including the African Union, SADC, EAC and others.

The Russian electoral authority on Thursday officially approved the 2024 presidential election results, declaring incumbent President Putin the winner, with 76.3 million people demonstrating their trust in his leadership.

Indonesia and Tanzania have a long history of good relations. Indonesia opens its diplomatic representative in Dar es Salaam since 1964. Meanwhile, Tanzania’s in its Embassy in Jakarta Indonesia.

The founding fathers of the two countries, President Soekarno and President Julius Nyerere are both architecting of the Non-Aligned Movement. The cordial relations are further strengthened by the exchange of visit of head of states from both sides, with the latest being that of President Samia in January this year.

During her visit they signed five agreements with Indonesia in which one of them will see 100 employees of the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) tap into an Indonesian scholarship programme that will be co-ordinated by Jakarta’s oil and gas giant Pertamina.
