NDC seeks investors for 1400MW renewable power

DAR ES SALAAM: THE National Development Corporation is seeking new investors for

19 renewable energy projects expected to produce over 1400MW of electricity.

The Acting Permanent Secretary of the Industry and Trade Ministry, Mr Sempeho Manongi told visiting Chinese investors in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday that seven out of the 19 are wind power projects and the remaining 12 are solar power projects.

The envisaged projects are in the regions of Arusha, Dodoma, Iringa, Singida and Morogoro, he told the Chinese investors from different companies who have visited the country to explore investment opportunities in various areas.

The delegates were taken through investment opportunities under the NDC for them to invest either under joint venture or solely. The opportunities include two wind power projects to produce 100MW in Arusha, another two wind power projects to produce 100MW in Dodoma and three wind power projects to generate 120MW in Iringa.

On the other hand, the corporation has earmarked four solar power projects to produce 234MW in Singida, three solar power projects in Dodoma to provide 156MW, three solar power projects to generate 526MW in Morogoro and two solar power projects to produce 190MW in Iringa.

The corporation invited them to the investment opportunities in renewable energy, taking into account the country’s need for more power for the manufacturing sector.

“It meant to make them understand business and investment opportunities in our country, our country has been implementing an open economy with China and Tanzania remains trade partner with China.”

“We have put friendly environment for investment and trade through reviewing laws and policies. We have enough land for investments,” he assured the delegates.

He said trade between the two countries has been further enhanced as the two presidents have been closely collaborating. In the process of enhancing trade, there have been a number of trade missions, these missions have enriched cooperation between the two countries.

“For this matter I am expecting that this meeting with the Chinese delegation would further enhance more cooperation between the two countries. This meeting would unlock huge opportunities in our country,” he was optimistic.

“China is known for being a big industrial country, we welcome you to invest in our country, we encourage joint ventures between Chinese Companies and Tanzanian companies in the manufacturing sector and agriculture,” he said.

However, he said, the delegates have shown interest to invest in the country’s agriculture sector including in making power tillers, assembling tractors, producing water pumps and medical devices.

Among others, the investors expressed readiness to invest US 24.5 million dollars (about 62.8bn/-) in agriculture, US 6 million dollar (about 15.4bn/-) in health, and US 11.3 million dollar (about 29bn/-) in construction, among others.

On his part, Mr Shen Dong, Party Secretary of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Committee, appreciated the AMEC Group of Companies for organising their trip to Tanzania. Mr Dong noted that their visit was for the fact that China and Tanzania have historic relations and their people share a lot of similarities.

He said they are in the country to make three accomplishments, including, to contribute to the two countries’ friendship, and to contribute for prosperity of Tanzania’s manufacturing and agricultural sector as well as helping in vocational education.
