Bashe: Our stock of 8.1m tonnes passes current demand

TANZANIA: Tanzania by producing a total of 8.1 million tonnes of maize for the 2022/23 season has

made massive strides surpassing its demands.

Making the revelation through his X account on Monday, Minister for Agriculture, Hussein Bashe further said that the country’s demand for maize is not even hitting 6 million tonnes, which makes the country’s trade pattern to grow and covern neighbouring countries like Kenya, Congo and Uganda.

Elaborating, he noted that the government will continue buying maize with a sole reason of protecting farmers without affecting consumers’ demand.

“The issue of fertilizer subsidies will continue. I have instructed the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA) to ensure that farmers, who have finished their slot for this season and are returning to farms should have access to the supply, let them get fertilizer service,” Mr Bashe said.

Pledging to support those who would need assistance from the ministry, Mr Bashe urged business people to actively use Tanzania Embassies in search of contracts outside the country.
