After Tanzania and China signed a protocol on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures to allow Tanzania grown avocados to access Chinese market, the Asian economic powerhouse has finally issued guidelines to be followed in exporting the ‘green gold’.
On November 2, 2022 President Samia Suluhu made a three-day State visit to China on an invitation by his counterpart, President Xi Jinpin as a way of strengthening bilateral ties where among many other agreements the two countries agreed to transport Tanzanian avocado to China.
A Decree No. 112 issued on November 15, 2022 by the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China states: “In accordance with relevant laws and regulations of the People’s Republic of China and the protocol of phytosanitary requirements for Export of Fresh Avocado Fruits from Tanzania to China signed between the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Tanzania, from the date of issuance of this Decree, fresh avocado fruits from Tanzania which meet the following requirement and allowed to be exported to China,” the decree stated
According to the decree, the requirements are as follows,
1. Legal basis on inspection and quarantine requirements
2. Name of product allowed to be exported to China
3. Allowed Produce Origin
4. Registration of Orchards, packing houses and fumigation treatment facilities
5. Quarantine Pest list of Chinese concern
6. Pre-Export requirement
7. Entry inspection and treatment of Non-Compliance
8. Compliance inspection and
