This follows the adoption of a new tariff order for Category A products amounting to 90.2 per cent or 5129 tariff lines which are set for liberalisation in 10 years.

An extra-ordinary meeting of the EAC Sectoral Council on Trade, Industry, Finance and Investment was staged on Friday which directed the EAC Secretariat to consider secondary categories B and C of the EAC Tariff Order.

The offer by the EAC is now set for review by the AfCTA Secretariat which is based in Accra, Ghana.

So far, 29 other countries under AfCTA have had their tariff offers verified.

The offer ensures countries meet the minimum criteria to start trading under the AfCTA covenant.

“The expanded opportunities include manufactured products, value addition, regional value chains, agro-processing, motor vehicle assembly, pharmaceuticals, auto spares industries and mineral processing among other areas,” stated Kenya’s EAC Principal Secretary Dr. Kevit Desai.

The EAC Secretariat is expected to meet on March 18 to come up with the customs union’s input on the rate for Common External Tariff (CET) to cover intra-Africa trading.

The proposal on CET rate is expected to weigh various economic impacts including tax revenues, industrial development and employment.
