Some 5.2 billion mobile subscribers have contributed about $4.4 trillion to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), data from the GSM Association (GSMA) have shown.

GSMA Director-General, Mats Granryd, disclosed this in Dubai at the Huawei Global MBB forum.

Emphasising the growing importance of mobile connectivity during the COVID-19 pandemic, Granryd hailed the industry as the steadying hand for society.

“It is fair to say the importance of resilient mobile connectivity to all segments of the economy has never been clearer. The mobile industry has become powerful. The industry had 5.2 billion mobile subscribers and made a $4.4 trillion contribution to global GDP,” he stated.

The GSMA head reiterated a rallying call around spectrum, insisting there was a need for more exclusive frequencies to be assigned to mobile operators at more reasonable prices.

According to him, this, together with 5G connectivity for enterprise verticals, development of new technology techniques, such as virtualised infrastructure, open interface standards and “mix and match” vendor solutions, were all priorities to ensure leadership in the next-generation.

Granryd expressed confidence that the industry would continue to invest in infrastructure, innovate applications capable of driving economies and foster strong partnerships across the vendor market to ensure new technologies are brought to market.

While the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) puts connected lines in Nigeria as at August 2021, at 329 million, active telephone lines are however, 189 million. But the National Bureau of Statistics’ GDP reports showed a nexus between these active lines and other sub-sectors of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector to the country’s economy.

The NBS report for the first and second quarters of the year showed that the sector contributed N5.5 trillion to real GDP in the first half of 2021.
