Former DCI Robert Manumba dies at 68

Dar es Salaam. The former director of criminal investigations (DCI), Robert Manumba has died at the age of 68, family has confirmed while undergoing treatment at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).

His Daughter the District Executive Director (DED) of Kigoma, Rose Manumba confirmed her father’s death through her social media Instagram account on Tuesday August 31, 2021.

“My father Robert Manumba, thank for showing me the real meaning of a father's love for a child and believing in my efforts that I can be better in anything I want. We laughed together and cried together, I will love you forever. May God rest you in peace my father,” she wrote.

Manumba was appointed  DCI in 2006 by the former President Jakaya Kikwete the position he held until he attained the legal retirement age of 60.
DCI Manumba has held various positions in government including court registrar between 1976 - 1977, Public Prosecutor in Kibondo and Kasulu district, in Kigoma region between 1977-1984 and Lecturer at Police College (1984- 1987) in Dar es Salaam.

He was later appointed Chief of Investigation Magomeni and Kinondoni Police District, before being appointed Deputy Chief of Regional Investigation in Dar es Salaam from 1987 to 1993.

Between 1993 and 1995, he was the Arusha Regional Detective Chief before being appointed to the post of Chief Lecturer at the Tanzania Police school  between 1995 and 1996.
 
He was appointed Head of the Counterfeiting Crime Investigation Unit Headquarters in 1996 and 1997 and later Head of Security, Intelligence and Anti-Drug Trafficking Unit at the Investigation Headquarters from 1997 to 2001.

From 2001 to 2006 he worked as Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation and from 2006 until his retirement in 2013, he was the Director of the department.

Some of the high profile cases during his time was Mwanza Regional Police Commander Liberatus Barlow who was murdered  in cold blood in 2012.

In early 2013, there were two attacks related to terrorism -- one in Arusha early the year when a bomb was hurled at worshippers in the compound of a Catholic Church and the second during a Chadema rally.
