President Uhuru Kenyatta Tuesday unveiled a new department in the Ministry of Education that will oversee the implementation of the competency based curriculum (CBC).

The Implementation of Curriculum Reforms department will monitor CBC rollout and track implementation and come up with mechanisms that prompt intervention.

Its mandate will be guided by recommendations contained in a CBC taskforce report on access, relevance, transition and quality launched Tuesday by Mr Kenyatta.

The 26-member taskforce chaired by Kenyatta University Deputy Vice Chancellor Fatuma Chege was appointed in June 2019 to advice the government on implementation of the new curriculum.

Under the CBC system, elementary education is divided into pre-primary and primary education, taking two and six years respectively.

Members in the taskforce included heads of primary and secondary, Association of Private Schools, faith-based organisations and civil society organisations.

Prof Chege’s team explored ways of enhancing access, relevance, equity and quality for effective implementation of the CBC that was rolled out in 2018.

The changes to the school calendar by the government meant that the rollout of the CBC to Grade Five will delay to July this year.

The rollout of the CBC to Grade Five was initially scheduled to start in January when pupils currently in Grade Four were to transition to the next class.
