The Teachers Service Commission is set to promote some 1,000 tutors despite opposition by the Kenya National Union of Teachers’ (Knut).

The commission has invited applications to fill the posts in line with the career progression guidelines (CPG)—an action Knut claims is in breach of court orders.

Knut has opposed the performance based progression module adopted by the TSC arguing that it will disenfranchise some 50,000 teachers due for promotions, having pursued further studies.

TSC’s decision to conduct promotions based on CPG has been a subject of contention between the teachers’ employer and union for some time now.

Last week, Knut filed a petition in court seeking the jailing of TSC boss Nancy Macharia for disobeying orders on implementation of CPG.

Knut secretary-general Wilson Sossion argued TSC continues to advertise and issue circulars for implementation of the guidelines, despite being suspended by the court in 2019.

Mr Sossion said the dignity of the court was under attack by the TSC actions. Though lawyer Hillary Sigei, Knut said the orders issued by Justice Byrum Ongaya in 2019 were still in force.

Last year, Knut accused TSC of running parallel payroll for teachers that denied its members pay increments and promotions.
