The Ministry of Education (MoE) directed the over 3,000 tutors recruited in the past three years to enroll at the Kenya Technical Trainers College (KTTC) to acquire skills on the art of teaching.

The law requires that pedagogical training is a requisite qualification for any trainer to be registered by the Tvet Authority.

“It is important to note that starting January 2021, Tvet Authority has granted a grace period of two years for those without pedagogy to acquire the same,” said Mr Elikana Mosiori, the human resource director at the State department of vocational and technical training (VTT) in a circular.

The cost of training set to start in February will be met by the individual trainers in what will dent their budgets.

Recruitment of Tvet trainers was recently transferred to the PSC from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in a move better profile the technical teachers and boost career progression.

The policy shift has, however has caused concern for the already trained Tvet tutors as it locked them out of job opportunities despite bearing the requisite qualifications.
