Nigeria to establish 30 e-waste collection centres nationwide

Nigeria will soon get a boost in the electronic waste (e-waste) sub-industry with the call for applications for the establishment of some 30 collection centres nationwide.

   
This was disclosed at the weekend at the 2020 ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue held in Lagos. The Executive Secretary, the e-Waste Producer Responsibility Organisation of Nigeria (EPRON), Mrs. Ibukun Faluyi, said the application is free.
   
Faluyi, who spoke on subtheme, e-Waste in Nigeria and Opportunities in Recycling, said EPRON as technical assistant to the initiative is offering the application for free, which could be accessed on its website.

According to her, there is no application fee attached as part of the incentive to get more people, especially Nigerians, involved.
   
At the end of the exercise to be conducted alongside the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), she said, about 90 jobs would be created.
   
This number of jobs, she explained, is because each of the collection centres is expected to have at least three staff to man its operations.
  
The ITREALMS e-Waste Dialogue had received backing from the stakeholders in the digital space, including the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Association of Licensed Telecom Operations of Nigeria (ALTON) and Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN).
   
There have been growing concerns over waste associated with electrical and electronic equipment and devices such as mobile phones, computers, TV-sets and fridges. Nigeria currently generates an excess of 1.1 million tonnes of e-waste annually.
