Naivasha youth have claimed that they have been denied work to upgrade the meter gauge railway. On Monday, a section of them blocked the busy Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway for hours and paralysed operations at the old meter gauge railway heading to the Inland Container Depot. The angry and unemployed youth from Jikaze village that neighbours the Mai Mahiu dry port claimed they have been discriminated against in the recruitment by the Rift Valley Railways. The protest spilled over the busy Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road where motorists were left stranded as police engaged the youth in running battles. Three of their leaders were arrested as they vowed that no works would continue until their grievances were addressed. In the last three weeks, a Chinese contractor has embarked on constructing the railway that seeks to join the SGR and the old railway line in Longonot.
