The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has started investigating the labelling of sweets and toys which are manufactured by some Chinese nationals in the country and packaged in egg-like shells.

UNBS said Tuesday that they suspect the labels and expiry dates of the sweets and toys were tampered with.
This was after a section of the media reported that fake eggs are being manufactured and sold in Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
According to the reports, the Chinese were manufacturing eggs using different chemicals in Kawempe, a suburb in Kampala.
However, UNBS said the products referred to were actually sweets in packages that looked like egg shells but were clearly labelled as Funny Toys.
“Apart from the appearance of the package, the product did not contain any features meant to mislead the public into believing that they are actual eggs. Our intervention as UNBS was due to suspected tampering with expiry dates and labels in Chinese language, in violation of the standard for labelling pre-packaged foods (US EAS 38: 2014),” reads part of the statement issued by the bureau's head of public relations, Mr Godwin Bonge Muhwezi.
Mr Muhwezi added that they have not received complaints or come across cases of fake eggs on the market.
“However, as a statutory body with a mandate to enforce standards to protect the health and safety of consumers and the environment against dangerous substandard products, we would like to urge any person with information that can help us in our investigations to report to us," he said.
