South African retailer Game Stores is facing a surge in staff
costs after signing the first pay agreement with workers that raises
their basic pay by seven per cent.
The new two-year
deal will see employees in the three job categories now earn Sh27,285,
Sh29,425 and Sh35,845 per month up from Sh25,500, Sh27,500 and Sh33,500,
respectively.
All unionisable employees joining the
firm for categories one, two and three jobs will receive a minimum
salary of Sh24,500, Sh28,500 and Sh34,500, respectively under the new
deal.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was
signed on Tuesday between the Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied
Workers (Kucfaw) and Game Discount World Kenya.
“The pay perks that we have managed to negotiate are
consolidated meaning they include various allowances including housing.
It is not what we had proposed since the negotiations started in May but
this is a good beginning and we anticipate better times in the next
CBA,” said Kucfaw secretary-general Bonface Kavuvi.
Female
employees will be entitled to three months maternity leave on full pay
exclusive of the 22-day normal annual holiday. Men will also be entitled
to 14 days paternity leave days exclusive of annual leave.
The
employer will also be required to meet 50 per cent of the cost of
medical scheme of the employee and that of the spouse where applicable.
Employees will also be entitled to three fully paid compassionate leave
days and additional five unpaid special leave days on application.
